Military Adoptions

You can adopt an Angel from the Salvation Army, and now you can adopt someone who is serving overseas in the military.

I've done this for the past couple of years and it's so much fun. First, I start out with a letter thanking them. When my dad was overseas he loved getting letters, cards, anything to read to pass the time. Include some of your favorite inspirational quotes, too. These men and women may be tough, but they all need a little encouragement and a reminder that what they are doing is important. And we are thankful.

Operation Care Packages is the program that helps facilitate the donations. Here's a list of a few ideas to include in your package:

Christmas Cards For Those Who Need It Most

If you spread this to people you know, think of how many folks we can say thank you to while they are in the hospital because they are in the military and are sick/injured or serving overseas.

It would be a great service project for scouts, church groups, etc. When doing your Christmas cards this year, take one card and send it to those serving us. If we pass this on and everyone sends one card, think of how many cards these wonderful special people who have sacrificed so much would get.

Here's the details:
Holiday Mail for Heroes
From the front lines to the home front, the American Red Cross provides service members, their families and veterans with the care and assistance they need.

The Red Cross is partnering with Pitney Bowes this holiday season for the Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign. For the second year in a row, we’re collecting holiday cards to distribute to American service members, veterans and their families in the United States and around the world. Pitney Bowes is generously donating technology, resources and postage to make this holiday card program possible.

Our goal is to collect and distribute one million holiday cards to spread holiday cheer and facilitate thanks to these brave individuals and families.

Card Guidelines:
Please follow these guidelines when mailing a card to ensure that your card will quickly reach service members, veterans and their families. Every card received will first be screened for hazardous materials by Pitney Bowes and then reviewed by Red Cross volunteers working in one of 16 sorting stations around the country.

-All cards must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, December 10, 2008. Cards sent after this date will be returned to sender.

-Participants are encouraged to limit the number of cards they submit to 25 from any one person or 50 from any one class or group. If you are mailing a larger quantity, please bundle the cards and place them in large mailing envelopes. Each card does not need its own envelope or postage.

-Please ensure that all cards are signed.

-Please use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member.” Cards addressed to specific individuals can not be delivered through this program.

-Please send cards as opposed to long letters which delay a quick review process.

-Please do not include email or home addresses on the cards, as the program is not meant to foster pen pal relationships.

-Please do not include inserts of any kind, including photos, as these items will be removed during the reviewing process.

-All cards received may be used in program publicity efforts, including appearing in broadcast, print or online mediums.

Ewww! Bed Bugs Spread Faster and Easier During the Holidays!

It's a very unsettling thought, your home invaded by bed bugs! While experts say you should always be vigilant, they warn that the holiday season is a fine time for those little pests to become an even bigger problem.

"Bed bugs are consummate hitchhikers. They can ride on your shoelace, on your pant leg, your coat or your luggage. I would suggest any travelers be cautious," says Michael Green with http://www.inspectorusa.com/ SWAT Termite and Pest Control.

There are a few things you can do to keep these little guys from latching onto you or your stuff. "When you go home, immediately take your clothes off, put them in the laundry, in a good hot dryer and that should take care of it," recommends Green.

When staying in a hotel, bring a flashlight and check out the room yourself. "Look at the sheets, do you see any blood spots? Because what happens when the bugs feed they are engorged with blood and a lot of times you will roll over on them, and, squish," says Green.

If you plan to go see a movie, ladies might want to leave their purses at home. "That's one less thing for a bed bug to crawl into, and for you to bring home," says Green.

A few other things to keep in mind, when you have a holiday party, don't throw those coats on your bed. Have a designated spot instead. Green also recommends pre-treating your home before you have a holiday party. That way, if a bug does hop into your home, you at least have a basis of protection. Clearing out clutter can also help, because the fewer places the bugs have to hide, the better.

Operation Narnia

The stars of Narnia are coming to Lexington! On Thursday, Lucie and Edmund will be at the Regal Cinemas in Hamburg for the official red carpet premiere of "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader."

But why would movie stars have their big unveiling in Kentucky? It's all part of Operation Narnia.

The folks behind Narnia decided to make their premiere extra special...They held a contest in conjunction with Operation: Christmas Child, benefiting the Good Samaritans Purse. Kids Can Be Heroes!

Kids can do good stuff, too! Just take the brainchild of Gabe O'Neill, Kids Are Heroes. It's an outstanding organization I've had the privilege of working with over the years.

One of the kids that really touched my heart, Casey Landahl, at the age of 5, this adorable little girl raised money to help animals. Not only does she have a huge heart, she's quite the witty little girl too. Read more about her and the other heroes here.

Check out the website, it's pretty fantastic...You can learn about all these amazing kids---and I do mean amazing---and all the inspiring things they do. It really makes you think, if kids can do it, why can't us grown ups?

As a person with Tourettes, I'm always trying to bring awareness to the disorder. One of the most well-known Tourettians, Tim Howard, who most of you know as the beloved soccer player, designed something pretty cool, just in time for the holidays.

Here's my latest blog for RTDNA. This posting was sparked by a viewer email I got a couple of weeks ago. Would love to hear your thoughts.

This is my first blog from my new home in Lexington, Kentucky. I left WHAG in Hagerstown, Maryland to take the weekend anchor and general assignment reporter position at LEX-18 at the end of Setember. I've been in Lexington for about a month now, and I am absolutely loving it!

Moving to a new city means making adjustments to most everything in my life, including my work. Getting used to new coworkers, how the station operates and of course my new viewers!

My first weekend of anchoring went pretty well, with the exception of mispronouncing a few street and town names. (Versailles is pronounced Ver-sails instead of Ver-sigh, for example).

But other than that, it went pretty smoothly! Or, so I thought.

It was my second week on the job and I got an email through my personal website (nikkiburdine.com). The beauty of my website is that people can contact me by using the little form, and it goes straight to me inbox. The bad part, those wishing to contact me do not have to use a valid email address.

Case in point, the email I got that sparked this blog post:

"I love Channel 18 and you have in a short period of time you destroyed my news. You look like you are constipated or had botox, your face never moves with expressions, your voice is monotoned and boring and your make-up is way too severe and you need to cover up your cleveage. I change the channel the second I see you and I'm not the only one that thinks this way. Kentucky doesn't need you. You are so phoney and think you're all that and a bag of chips...wrong honey."

Wow! Mean, right? Plus, who says "all that and a bag of chips?" That is so 1993. But, I digress.

After reading that email, the first thing I felt was hurt. I was genuinely upset. I showed the email to my coworkers and friends; they all, thankfully, told me this person was wrong and just crazy. Also, amost all of them had gotten some sort of hate mail throughout their careers. That made me feel better, but also got me to thinking. Even if you have something that mean to say, who would ever say that to someone? Someone who is pretty gutsy, right?

But this person had no guts. How do I know that? Because the email comes from "SandraLeigh ." SandraLeigh didn't even put her real email address down. Which makes it all the more clear, this person is very sad on the inside.

When I was growing up, watching the local news, never would I or anyone in my family pick up the phone to call the news anchor and tell them how horrible their hair looked that day. Most people wouldn't back then either. It may be a sign of the times, after all The Today Show did a piece last week on "Is Civility Dead?" Quite possibly, yes.

The truth is, the internet gives people a mask to hide behind, where they can be as indignant as they want and share their unedited thoughts freely. Is social media blurring the lines between strangers? Would a complete stranger walk up to me and tell me I was awful? Probably not. (I'm looking at you, SandraLeigh.)

Another instance that drove this point home, was the day after I received this email. I was in my car listening to the local radio station, and they were reading off emails from listeners. No surprise, most of them were not nice emails. That's not because those D.J.'s were bad people, either. It's because people will nine times out of 10 say what they want through the annonymity of the internet, but not to your face.

This is definitely not the first mean email a news anchor has received, nor will it be the last I receive. That is the beauty of social media, and the anonymity it gives us.

If you are going to put yourself out there as a journalist on Twitter, Facebook, your own website (which I highly recommend), you better be prepared for feedback. Good, bad and plain irrational. Social media gives us all a platform to connect and socialize, but it also gives crazies the ability to contact you anonymously. Being an on-air news anchor, people often feel like they know you, and all too often feel self-righteous enough to contact you and tell yo how you feel. Facebook lets you do that without talking to someone face to face. So does Twitter and email. Let's be honest, I highly doubt SandraLeigh would say those things to my face.

Don't get me wrong, I love Facebook and Twitter as much as the next person. Actually probably more. But the email just opened my eyes and made my skin a little bit thicker. So some advce to future journalists out there, make sure you can take things with a grain of salt. Constructive criticism is great, but other than that, it's not worth your worries.

The same goes for cyber-bullying, which is an entirely new can of worms. Now I know how those teenagers feel.

So treat others as you want to be treated, brush the "haters" off, and be open to construcive criticism. When you sign up for Twitter and Facebook, make sure in addition to your password, you have thick skin. And, to those reading this, please don't be afraid to send me your critiques. I'll accept them with open arms.

So journalists, just keep giving them something to talk about. It's better than not being talked about at all, right?

Fashion for Paws held a photo exhibit in Washington, D.C. showcasing the fantastic images from years past F4P. Although I couldn't be there in person, one of my pictutres was up for grabs!

The event raised lots of money for the Humane Society...and got people excited for Fashion for Paws 2011!

Changing of the Guards

No, it's not Veterans Day, Memorial Day, or any other kind of day we are supposed to remember our men and women of our armed forces. It's just any old day.

But these seemingly ordinary days are the days we need to especially remember those who fight for us every day.

If you've never been to Arlington National Cemetery, you probably don't know how amazing the Changing of the Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is.

Even if you've been before, read this. This forward was too great not to pass on...and it will truly give you chills down your spine!

ARLINGTON CEMETERY - On Jeopardy the other night, the final question was "How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns"---- All three missed it.

1. How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns and why?

21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary.

2. How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his return walk and why?

21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1.

3. Why are his gloves wet?

His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the rifle.

4. Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time and if not, why not?

He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path,he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder.

5 How often are the guards changed?

Guards are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?

For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be between 5' 10' and 6' 2' tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30.'

Other requirements of the Guard: They must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of their lives.

They cannot swear in public for the rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the uniform {fighting} or the tomb in any way. After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only 400 presently worn. The guard must obey these rules for the rest of their lives or give up the wreath pin.

The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt.

There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror.

The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor watch TV. All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred.

Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe E. Lewis {the boxer} and Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy, {the most decorated soldier of WWII} of Hollywood fame.Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty.

In 2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was approaching Washington , DC , our US Senate/House took 2 days off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC evening news, it was reported that because of the dangers from the hurricane, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment.

They respectfully declined the offer, 'No way, Sir' Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be afforded to a service person.

The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.

Man Catches Burglar by Using Skype

Here was my story from today...

All too often we hear about crimes being committed with the help of social media. But rarely does it happen that the internet can actually help catch a criminal in the act.

But that's exactly what happened in Nicholasville. Donovan Jefferson was chatting on Skype with his cousin, Connie Evans in Remlap, Alabama.

While the two were chatting on Skype, Connie had to leave to pick up her son, promising to return soon.

"I just left it connected so I could hear but not see. Shortly after I heard a knock at the door," says Donovan.

That's when Skyping when from staying in touch, to staying safe.

"Immediately I knew she was being robbed," says Donovan.

"I was on my way back home and Donovan called me and told me that someone was breaking in my home, "says Connie.

"I was able to see the crime take place right there," says Donovan.

Thanks to Donovan's quick thinking, he was able to snap a picture using Skype and catch the criminal in the act.
The picture proved to be a valuable piece of evidence for police.

"Police said with the picture, one of the officers knew the lady immediately," says Connie.

Police even interviewed Donovan about what he saw, all of course, via Skype.

Donovan says, "I was just happy that I was online with her."

Lexington Ballet: The Haunted

Thanks to the Lexington Ballet for letting me be judge in their costume contest at the Masquerade Gala! There were some gorgeous costumes and it was definitely a difficult decision :)

What was more gorgeous, the performance by the ballet company. Luis Dominguez, the artistic director of the Lexington Ballet is absolutely fantastic and put on quite a show!

A Royal Recovery

It's been a little over a year since an accident involving a teenager and the tractor he was riding on. Today, that teenager is not only on the "fast road" to recovery, he's now royalty.

It was a day like any other for Lucas Cannon, working on his family's farm before going to a high school football game. But Lucas never made it to the game. In fact, he almost didn't make it at all.

"I was in a tractor accident," remembers Lucas. "I rolled to my stomach and crawled 15 feet. I don't remember any pain I was just in shock. I was just screaming, not crying."

It's a day Lucas will never forget, and neither will most people who know him.

"My phone rang, and this horrible sound was on the other end," says Becky Cannon, Lucas' mother. "I recognized the voice but I didn't know what he was saying. i knew it was Lucas."

These days, Lucas is a senior at Fleming County High School, where he can be seen wheeling down the hallways. But it's been a long road to this point.

"our first meeting with the doctor was he only had 1 to 2 percent chance of living," says Clay Cannon, Lucas' father.

But what you won't see or hear from Lucas, is a negative attitude.

"i'm not any different. I'm just the same as they are. Just in a different situation," says Lucas.

One of the most impressive things to come out of this entire ordeal is Lucas' attitude. He's maintained the most positive outlook on life throughout it all. He shows it on his prosthetic leg with the quote, "impossible is nothing."

"I feel fine, I am ready to get up and go everyday just like nothing ever happened," says Lucas.

His positive attitude was recognized by his classmates when they crowned him homecoming king.

"I feel fine. i am ready to get up and go everyday just like nothing ever did happen."

His fellow homecoming queen, Brooke Meade says, "they announced the king first. I was so excited Lucas got it!"

A once uncertain future for this 17 year old, and now he's positively living his life to the fullest.

Lucas is still undergoing therapy and hopes to have complete mobility with his prosthetic leg in the future. He also says he wants to be a prosthesist when he grows up and help other amputees.

Beirut Bombing: 27 Years

Today is the 27th anniversary of the Beirut Bombings...Some say it was the beginning of the War on Terror.

My father is a Colonel in the Marine Corps, he was in Beirut at the time of the bombing. He was just blocks away from the barracks that were hit. Thankfully my dad was spared, but 241 other Marines, soldiers and sailors were not.

It was a peace-keeping mission.

BEIRUT, LEBANON - In 1983, a suicide bomber driving a truck loaded with explosives at Lebanon's Beirut International Airport killed 241 U.S. Marines and Sailors. Almost simultaneously, another attack two miles away killed 58 French Paratroopers. The U.S. Marines were part of a multi-national force overseeing the Palestinian withdrawal from Lebanon. A brutal bombing in Beirut on this date in history, October 23, 1983.

First Week on the Job!

My first week in Lexington has been absolutely wonderful!

I am so thrilled to be living in the Blue Grass state...The people here are wonderful, and my coworkers are really nice too!

My first story at LEX18 was a house fire in Winchester, KY...Here's the link: Winchester Fire

The next day I went to Corbin, KY for a Marine killed in action's body coming home. Tough story to cover, his family was devastated...But so proud of their Marine. Semper Fi. Marine brought home.

And the next day I covered a story preparing for flu season...Kentucky had their first confirmed case of the flu and we talked to the state health department.

After that, it was time for the weekend. We didn't have a 6pm show due to Notre Dame football on Saturday, but the 11pm show went pretty well! I did mispronounce a few places and streets in Lexington...Oops! I'm still learning!

As most of you may know by now, I have accepted a job at WLEX-18 in Lexington, KY to be the weekend anchor and general assignment reporter. Although I am so sad to leave the DC/MD/VA area, I am thrilled for this new experience.

Working in Hagerstown and at WHAG has been one of the best experiences of my life... I hope we can all stay in touch.

Wine Country

My first trip to Sonoma, California was absolutely unforgettable! Justin and I originally went out there for Michille's wedding, but we decided to make a little vacation out of it.

We stayed at the beautiful Sonoma Plantation. Our first day there we had a welcome reception for the bride and groom...It was just insanely beautiful...Words cannot describe this event!

The second day we spent vineyard-hopping... We went to Kunde, Wellington, Landmark, and several more... We went to dinner at the Glen Ellen Inn...It was a french themed restaurant...yum!

The next day we did a little more wine tasting...We had brunch at the Fig Girl restaurant and then stopped by Hawke Winery. Some of the best Cab I have ever had! From there we went to Gundlach Bundschu...An old German winery that I loved!

That night was the wedding (it was black tie) and honestly the most beautiful wedding I have ever been to. Thanks to Joel and Michille for allowing us to be a part of their special day!

New England Trip

I just returned from an amazing trip up North. And let me tell you, this Southern Belle loved everything New England had to offer!
In Boston, I toured the prestigious Harvard, visited with old friends and went to a Red Sox game. From there we ventured to Kennebunkport, Maine. I fell in love with this adorable town! We were there for a wedding at the Nonantum Resort, but we also got to see the Bush compound and enjoy the local sights. We even got to see the Bush family because they were all in town.

Hero of the Month: August

The Hero for the Month of August is John Sun. Click here to see my interview with this 10 year old kid who is already making a difference.

John's special project is called "Black To Blue" which aims to raise $5,000 to help clean up the animals devastated by the Gulf oil spill. At just nine-years-old, he already knows what he wants to do with his life, he wants to help animals as a veterinarian. Until then, he raises money to help them!

That's not all, John also raises money and awareness for premature babies. He has also collected more than 173 pounds of aluminum cans which goes towards his purchase of 50 Boyds bears, he then takes the bears to the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Frederick Memorial Hospital.

John also raises money for Small Angels Rescue, a non-profit that rescues small animals. He's raised more than $400 for that organization.

We're Cooking Peach Cobbler!

8 fresh peaches, peeled, pitted and sliced
1/2 cup butter, cut into pieces (see cook's note
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup vegetable oil (see cook's note)
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Spray a 9-inch-by-13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.

Arrange the peaches in the prepared pan. Scatter the butter over the peaches, and then sprinkle the brown sugar evenly on top. Set aside.

Mix flour, white sugar, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Stir the oil into the beaten eggs, and then stir the egg mixture into the dry ingredients. Spoon the batter over the peaches. Sprinkle cinnamon on top.

Bake in the preheated oven until the crust is lightly browned, about 45 minutes.

Serves 12.

Art in the Park:
Art in the Park is a joint effort between the Frederick Keys and the Arts Council. Throughout the game the the players will wear jerseys that have been specially made by local artists. The players will sign them and auction them off after the game. There will also be performances and other art activities. Art in the Park is on August 27th at Harry Grove Stadium.

Frederick Fashion Week:
Frederick Fashion Week is in its fourth year. This year the fashion show will feature local clothing boutiques, salons and accessory stores' merchandise as models strut down the runway. Frederick Fashion Week is September 16th - 18th. The event starts with a cocktail hour at 7 and Fashion Show at 8pm at The Cultural Arts Center. Click here to see video from last year's event.

Frederick Theater Season Launch Party:
Theater groups in Frederick will unveil their upcoming season to the public on September 23rd. The kick-off party is organized by the Frederick Theatre Collective and will be held at The Cultural Arts Center.

Getting married on a day like August 9, 2010, which is 8-9-10, is not unheard of, it makes it easier to remember your anniversary.

One couple in Hagerstown took it to the next level by getting married in an unforgettable location: the Washington County Humane Society.

The Hendrick's wedding party were their three dogs: Brandy, Milli and Smuckers.

Sandy and Brian Hendrick have been engaged for two years. They decided to get married on on Monday because of the memorable date: 8-9-10, but they also decided to hold it at the humane society.

"We kind of jokingly said, 'Why don't we get married at the humane society?' and I said, 'Well why not'" says Sandy.

Their message is to adopt from your local shelter.

While they didn't have all the regular wedding traditions, they did have a few. Including their own wedding march, customized of course, with their dog singing the song.

At the reception, cake was fed to the human guests and milk bones for the rest of the attendees.

In lieu of presents, the Hendricks asked their guests to bring a donation to the humane society.

"It's great! I told her I've been to three already and this is by far the best," says Angi Hartman, a guest.

"It's an unusual request, but they support us, and the least we can do is support them for their special day," says Paul Miller with the human society.

For their honeymoon, the couple didn't venture to the tropics, instead they visited the dog kennels.

"They are out here just looking for love and their forever home, and we were looking for love as well," says the couple.

The humane society says they would love to have more weddings at their location and of course are always accepting donations.

Inside TSA Fall 2010

Nikki Burdine anchors the noon and 5pm news on WHAG -TV in Hagerstown,Maryland. She received her BA in Journalism and Electronic Media from theUniversity of Tennessee where she was the president of the campus-run TVstation. She describes herself as a “Southern Belle.” Nikki. I had the support of my family and friends and a small town of accepting people.

TSA: What do you like most about your work?

NB: I think I have the best job in the world. Every single day is something new and I learn something new. I’m able to learn and become a better person by meeting people throughout the community. I feel blessed.

TSA: Do you think that TS has had an impact on your career?

NB: No, I don’t think it had an impact. In the beginning I would have said ‘yes,’ and at college it did, but not now. When I’m working I’m in ‘the zone.’ A lot of people with TS say that about performing. When I’m anchoring the news, I don’t think about it. All the bad stuff falls to the wayside. I have had to overcome more obstacles and that makes me appreciate my job more. There’s an impact, but not in a bad way.

TSA: When were you diagnosed?

NB: Around the age of 11, originally the diagnosis was OCD. The medication wasn’t working and things got aggressive with violent tics. My mother, bless her, is a special education teacher. She did some research and determined it was more than OCD, more because of the tics that I couldn’t control. She took me to Duke for testing.

TSA: Does anyone else in your family have TS, or a related disorder?

NB: No, no one in the family has TS, but maybe my grandmother had OCD.

TSA: What were your school years like?

NB: I was very blessed. I was never bullied. Middle school was rough — just coming to terms with the diagnosis was tough. Once I was in high school the difficult part for me was writing, erasing and writing again when doing my homework. I was never good in math and a math teacher kind of bullied me. He thought my father was doing my homework for me. My father saw how difficult it was for me — writing and erasing and writing — and he’d take what I did and then copy it. My father had to explain it to the teacher who thought we were making TS up. He thought I was cheating and my dad was helping me cheat! My friends were good. I had these tics that scrunched up my face and puckered my lips. There are pictures of me with all my girlfriends all making that same face. They knew me as quirky Nikki. My freshman year at college was bad. I had everything under control at home. I had tics, but they were manageable and I wasn’t depressed. But the change of scenery, not living with my parents, being in college — my tics got bad and I became severely depressed. I’m normally a bubbly, happy person. I couldn’t get out of bed. They were afraid I’d commit suicide so they put me on pills for depression. At one point I was taking 19 pills a day! I didn’t want to kill myself, but I didn’t want to be a zombie, either. I gained 30 pounds in one month. My mother said, ‘This is not my daughter.’ It wasn’t healthy. Everyone wanted me to drop out and move home and go to a community college. But quitting wasn’t an option for me. I didn’t listen. We switched doctors and figured out a medication that had the least side effects, we weaned me down to one medication. I still have tics, but with aging and maturing, I’ve learned to cope with TS.

TSA: What do you do to cope with the stress involved in your kind of work?

NB: I don’t really have a technique. If I feel tics getting bad, I go to a bathroom and let ‘em loose. When I’m in the zone the tics just go away — the stress fuels me at work. I thrive on the air. I’ve gotten an urge to do a tic during commercial break, so I do a muted version, a little grunt. I am not ‘cured.’ I have certain times when I just let ‘em go! Mornings in the house are a good time to get them out of my system. It’s my safety valve. And when I go home you better believe I let go. My cat doesn’t care. Home is a place where I can let it all out. This became a way to train my brain: home yes and work no.

TSA: As a media insider, what do you think of the way TS is portrayed in movies, TV, etc.?

NB: I don’t have a problem with movies with the funny guy having TS. I don’t get offended. It’s still awareness. I consider TS something that makes me unique. Nine years ago, I wouldn’t have said this, but funny or silly opens up the possibility of people watching to ask about TS. Even though some people can get offended, I poke fun at myself. When my co-workers make fun of TS, they know I don’t take it too seriously. I’ve had to overcome all this, why not laugh at it? It’s what makes me special.

TSA: You are already a role model for many of the girls who attended the TSA national
conference. Do you have any advice for girls with TS?

NB: A positive attitude is the best thing a girl can have. If you are positive and able to smile, that will get you a long way. Think negatively and everything is going to be gloomy and sad. Find the sunny side. I truly believe that it has helped me get through the hard years. Surround yourself with positive people. If you have a friend who is kind of a jerk, get rid of him. Supportive parents and friends, good solid people — that’s it but it’s easier said than done.

TSA: Do you have any advice for parents of children with TS?

NB: When I was first diagnosed my parents wanted to talk to me about TS, but I didn’t want to talk about it. They were hurt by me not wanting to talk about TS and how I felt, so I’d say to parents don’t nag and don’t take it personally when your kids don’t want to talk about TS.
Ask, ‘How was your day?’ Don’t ask, ‘Why are you ticcing?’ or ‘How were your tics today?’
Don’t force them to talk when they aren’t ready. Just make sure you are there for them and make sure their friends are good people. Teens talk to friends not parents, so make sure their friends understand TS. Make sure the teachers know about it, too. That 8th grade math teacher… he finally got it after we explained it. Communication can solve so many things. The more we address things, the more we take care of them. You can’t go wrong
by talking. 

Local Teacher Turned Author Writes Second Book

A local middle school teacher didn't spend her summer relaxing like most teachers. Instead, she finished her second book. It's part of a series titled "Bibia." I sat down with Purnima Mead to talk about the release of her second book.

Purnima's first book, titled "Bibia the Butterfly," was released last year. Her second book, "Bibia's Story," will be released Septemeber 5th. A book release party will be held on Sunday, September 5th at 5:30 p.m. at 4203 Maryland Court, Middletown, Maryland.

Hero for the Month of July

She may only be 13 years old, but Emily Zimmerman is one amazing kid. She has not only battled leukemia, but she has also helped others fighting cancer. Click here to watch the video from Emily's interview.

Emily is our hero for this month, and we wanted to have her on the show to tell us about how she makes the world a better place.

She held basket Bingo events to raise money for "The Jeremy Foundation" and "The Casey Cares Foundation."

So far she has raised more than $6,000.

Media Social at The Commandant's Home

Tuesday evening I had the honor and privilege to attend a Media Social at the Commandant's home. General James Conway and his wife graciously welcomed me and several other journalists. As a daughter of a Marine, it was a very special event.

General Conway is set to retire from the Marine Corps. I wish he and his wonderful wife a relaxing and joyous retirement!

I also had the opportunity to meet several other fantastic journalists, including Jamie McIntyre. Check out his latest venture, The Line of Departure.com.

There were also some fantastic journalists from Military.com, including Ward Carroll.

and even author, Richard Whittle, of "The Dream Machine: The Untold History of the Notorious V-22 Osprey." Whittle just appeared on The Daily Show.

It was an honor to be there and share in the moment as General Conway prepares for retirement. Congratulations!

97 Years Old, and still Volunteering

In my job, I often get to meet some pretty amazing people. Marguerite Cyr is one of them. She's 97 years old, and still volunteering. I sat down with her and those who know her best to hear how she does so much for our community.

Washington County American Red Cross and the Girl Scouts of America teamed up to honor a woman in Washington County whose been volunteering for more than 45 years.

The "Women of Distinction" award is being given to Marguerite E. Cyr.

Cyr has been an active member of The American Red Cross of Washington County, The YMCA, The Girl Scouts of America and teaching art at local schools.

She is being honored at the "Women of Distinction" luncheon at the Fountainhead Country Club in Hagerstown on August 5th at 11 a.m.

Here's my latest blog for RTDNA. The importance of personal branding.

As a news anchor and reporter, the words that come out of your mouth and the information you give to the community is the most important thing you do. It’s imperative that the public service we provide is accurate.

While that is and should be priority number one for journalists, let’s not forget about priority No. 2. Me, myself and I.

In my short career, I have tried to seek out the reporters and anchors that I strive to be. They have a few things in common: They are good at what they do, they are at a place where I want to be, they are respected and they own their personal brand.

Now you might think that being a journalist would just require you to take ownership in your writing and to promote your work and your company’s work. While you are right, you also need to be given credit for the awesome job you do. Reason No. 1 for capitalizing on your personal brand.

One of the best ways to own your personal brand is to have your own website. I recently discovered this in building my personal brand. Throughout my wonderful Twitter network, I have met people that have built a website for me that I can promote what I do. Whenever I have a story I am proud of, I post it on my website. Then, if I have a news director or someone I want to show my work to, I just send them to my website. While they’re there, they can see all the other things that I do. My personal brand. It’s a hub for my Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc etc etc. It’s a perfect place to centralize all your social networking sites to show people you have a grip on modern technology and social networking. Plus, you can do a little bragging about yourself.

Another bonus: Think about when you apply for a job. How great would it be to just send a news director a link to www.your-name-here.com where your reel, resume and list of references are. Your website might be so captivating they might stick around for a while, get to know you, and who knows, maybe you’ll have something in common? Something that catches his/her eye and gives you a one-up on the competition. Although most stations still like to have that DVD in hand to look at, I wouldn’t be surprised if within the next few years, news directors just wanted a link they could click on. Why not K.I.S.S.? (Keep It Simple Stupid!)

Let’s be honest, the shorter, more concise the resume the better. The more to the point the cover letter the better. Everyone is busy, the majority of news directors will not read a piece of paper you mail them. But, in clicking through your snazzy website, they might stumble upon a cleverly written bio or blog. Think of it as another way to brag on yourself. Don’t have room on your resume to list all those wonderful volunteer activities? Or what about a blog you wrote that you are particularly proud of? Put it on your website. Who knows, the news director could find something he likes.

I know building a website is expensive. Trust me, I just went through it. But there are plenty of ways you can do it for not very much coin at all. Setting up a free WordPress blog and downloading a free theme is easy to do. It does get complicated when working with templates and adding your own twist, but it’s nothing a little reading and FAQ pages couldn’t help solve.

One more branding tip: I would suggest going to all the popular social networking sites, video sites, etc and signing up. You never know when you might need it, and you want it to be “YOUR NAME.” Not “Your Name 135” because someone else beat you to the punch. I recommend going to Vimeo, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Livestream, Ustream, WordPress, Blogger, Tumbler, Shutterfly, EventBrite, Air Talent Social, Google Profile, LinkedIn, Doostang, and the list goes on and on. I know there’s a lot and it’s a daunting task to manage them all, but just because you have an account on one of these sites doesn’t mean you have to be active with it. I have an account at most of these sites, but I only actively use a handful of them. The point is to stake your claim in your name in that site, before someone else does. Who knows, your next boss could require you to have a TwitPic account!

Own everything that is your name, take pride in it and use it to your advantage.

Don’t get me wrong, there is a difference between self-promotion and a personal brand. Although it is a thin line, I believe it’s one we as journalists should be careful not to cross. At the end of the day, we are not the story. And although you probably did a fantastic job in that piece, and you should promote it on your blog, don’t be obnoxious. If you have to ask, “is this too much?” The answer is probably yes.

Memphis for the 4th!

While there was plenty of fun stuff to do in the DC/MD/VA area, I chose to take a trip down south to my home state, Tennessee. I spent the weekend in Memphis with family and friends. I was fully expecting it to be HOT, like the typical Memphis weather...But it was surprisingly not that bad! I apparently left the triple-digits weather in DC. Yikes!

Thanks to Memphis for a wonderful, relaxing trip. And if you are ever in Western Tennessee, visit the restaurant "Flight." (In addition to the obvious Rendezvous and other Tennessee BBQ stops, of course). It was one of the BEST restaurants I have ever been to...Food was delicious, atmosphere was wonderful and the service was fantastic!

Baby Dies While in Daycare, Parents Want Answers

Here's a story I did on Thursday in lieu of anchoring... It absolutely broke my heart. A mother went to pick up her 12 week old son at daycare, only to be greeted with ambulances and police cars, telling her her son died.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, PA - A Pennsylvania family is mourning the loss of their 12 week old baby boy. The parents say they didn't find out their son was dead until they showed up at the daycare to pick him up.

Kira Watson went to pick up her son, Izaden Michael Amir, at Darlene Quivers home daycare on Tuesday, just as she always does when she gets off work at two.

When she got there, she knew something was wrong. "I was like what's going on? I said 'Are my kids okay?' He said 'I'm not sure, which ones are yours?' That right there I lost it. I went into the house and she was sitting there, she said 'I'm sorry, he's dead, I'm so sorry, he's gone, he's dead.'"

Kira then called her husband, Ian, to tell him the news.

"I got the call from my wife and I really couldn't understand, but it was just panic. I kind of knew it was something. I knew it was too late. She put the ambulance guy on the phone. When I heard authority voice, he said 'There's no easy way to say it.' I knew it. I just lost it," recalls Ian.

State police say an autopsy has been done on Izaden and his death is under investigation. The Watsons are waiting for answers.

"She said she had laid him on his belly and that he was just fine plenty of times before. She went to get him up to change his diaper, it seemed like he was still sleeping, and she realized his eyes were open and he wasn't breathing. That's when she tried CPR, she was on the phone with 911," says Kira.

Kira says Izaden was a healthy baby boy and full of life. Although she doesn't believe there was anything malicious about what happened that day, she is still longing for answers.

"I was trying to put myself in her shoes over and over again, and my heart goes out to her, too. I know she's hurting also. I believe the first phone call was to 911. I believe she did that and did take the right steps, but her next phone call was to her daughter, I should have been, or Ian should have been the next phone call," she says.

WHAG talked with Darlene Quivers at her daycare center, but she did not want to comment.

The results of the autopsy for Izaden are still pending.

A funeral for Izaden will be held Friday, June 25 at 2pm in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center. The family will received friends one hour prior to the service.

A memorial fund is being set up in Izaden's honor. WHAG will post the details on this website when they are available.

Kids Are Heroes: Hero of the Month for June

We all know kids can say the darnedest things, but kids also do some pretty amazing things. Like our hero for the month of June: Ricky Springer. Ricky is part of a local organization called Kids Are Heroes, a group that brings kids together to inspire others and give back to a cause of their choice.

Ricky is not your typical kid, he has a rare disease that affects his gastrointestinal track, called Eosinophilic Colitis (EC). This disease renders his body unable to tolerate most food proteins. From the Anchor Chair: To 'Flip' or Not to 'Flip'

In a previous blog post, I talked about using UStream as a way to connect with viewers with reporters and anchors on another level. While it is a great way to let viewers in on the inside of a show, is the poor quality and delay of online video worth it? Is connecting with our viewers worth the sacrifice of quality video and immediacy that comes with it?

I'm not just wondering about UStream but rather all online, hand-held, hastily-shot video. What about going live for your station via Skype? So many people are doing it these days, not just small town reporters who don't have a photographer or a live truck. For goodness sake, Oprah is doing it. We all know she doesn't need to cut anything out of her budget.

Skype, TwitVideo, UStream, LiveStream, etc. are all great tools for journalists. They help capture the moment you're in right then and there, and deliver it to the viewer. And while that's all fine and dandy, let's be honest, sometimes the sacrifice in quality isn't completely necessary.

I've used the Flipcams many times before and they are great for covering breaking news (or when you have nothing else to use.) And remember, the very best camera you can have is the one you have in your hand when the news is breaking. But should Flipcams be used for packages and video to air on the 6 p.m. news regularly? I don't think so.

Don't get me wrong, I love how lightweight the Flipcams are. Compared to my 42 pounds of combined equipment I usually use, they are simply heaven, but that's not to say they should be the default option.

What often separates news produced by broadcast professionals from that of citizen journalists and bloggers is quality - quality of reporting, quality of writing and quality of presentation. In my experience, a professional, high-quality newscast goes a long way with an audience, especially if it's done consistently.

Trust me, I'm not "hating" on Flipcams here, nor am I advocating that you stop using them. They are invaluable during breaking news and as the technology evolves a bit more I'm sure even the most specialized cameras will fit in our palms, but right now, as professional broadcast journalists, we should be aiming a bit higher whenever we can.
